Why is Crowd Control Necessary at an Event?

Firstly, what is crowd control?

Crowd control is a practice of ensuring all attendees at an event or location are managed to keep attendees, employees and property safe.  Crowd control isn’t necessarily just for large scale events but also used at locations such as airports and shopping centres. It can be used anywhere a large crowd gathers to ensure the crowd is guided through a process or kept in a safe environment.

Crowd control at an event…

Specifically, at an event crowd control is used to, most importantly, ensure the event is held with minimal risk.

Events are becoming more and more popular with the reduced impact of Covid, and these events require crowd control to ensure they are as risk free as possible.

The event and / or license holder has a responsibility to ensure all attendees are kept safe and crowd control is a means of allowing this to happen. Every single event is different, and each type of event requires analysis to understand the risks involved and the steps needed to manage the crowd.

What risks can crowd control combat?

Crowd control can manage a number of different risks at a large-scale event such as a festival, here are just a few:

·       A surge of people or dense crowds in one location

·       Falling and crushing of people

·       The ability for people to get lost or separated

·       The volume of first aid occurrences

·       Violent offences

·       Damage to equipment or harm to colleagues

·       Traffic incidents on arrival at an event

·       Dangerous behaviour

·       Congestion

·       Weather changes

·       Ill health of attendees

The type of event dictates the type of crowd control required and each event needs to be managed differently. Aspects to take into consideration are things such as the demographic of the attendees, the location of the event, the attractions or performers, weather impacts, recent history at similar events and the list goes on.

Crowd control is necessary to allow attendees to have a good time and really enjoy the event without worrying about incidents occurring. By establishing positive crowd management, an event can be held successfully with minimal risk to safety
